There will be some serious chess played at the 4th annual Victoria Chess Festival at the Hotel Grand Pacific this weekend.

The competition includes the Grand Pacific Open, featuring 80 of the strongest chess masters from British Columbia, Alberta and Washington state.

Play begins Friday at 6 p.m. and continues in the afternoon and evening Saturday and Sunday, culminating with the final round Monday at 10 a.m. Competitors include B.C. Champion Jack Yoos and International Master Lawrence Day who writes the weekly chess column in the Toronto Star.

Participants range from seven to 70 years of age and includes one of the game’s brightest young stars, seven-year-old Joshua Doknjas. He has already won several youth championships.

Spectators may attend festival chess matches free of charge. Call 250-388-5187 for more information.
