      Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 25 in 2009). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service.

First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the civil war), it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.

      Dear friends,

On this Memorial Day, it is my great hope that you will take a few minutes of your time to reflect on what an honor it is to live in our great country and remember the men and women in our nation’s armed services – those who are willing to give the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms as Americans.

Last Friday, I had the great pleasure of spending time with the Midshipmen and their families at the commencement ceremony of the U.S. Naval Academy. These young men and women are a testament to what it means to serve a cause greater than self.

As we take a moment to remember those who have fallen in defense of our Nation, please keep all of our service men and women and each of our veterans in your thoughts and prayers today and every day.

      Sincerely,

      John McCain
