I’d like the rook on f8, but a straight 1. … Rf8 allows Qf4 with no great advantage. Starting with 1. … e3, however, gives Black a 2nd access to the back rank and threatens … Qf2. So,
        1. … e3
        2. Rxe3 (how else to meet … Qf2+?)
        2. … Rf8
        3. Qf4 (how else to meet … Qf1#?)
        3. … Qb1+
White has a choice of how to lose the exchange.

If 1…. e3 2.Rc2; and if black captures the rook with 2…. Qxc2 white has a perpetual check.
