White would threaten mate with Rxh7+ if it were not for the black knight on f6. Thus, Nxd5! should win for white.

        What about 1. Nxd5! ?
        The big threat is 2. Nxf6 followed by Rxh7+. 1. -, Qxd5 fails to 2.
Rxh7+ and white should be enough material ahead after Nxh7 (Kxh7?? 3. Rh1+) 3. Qxd5 (Q vs NR and many of black’s pawns are vulnerable to a queen’s attack) to win this end game (with a bit of patience as it is not yet over but it’s only a question of time).

        1. -, Rg8?? won’t help. 2. Nxf6, Rxg5 3. Rxh7#

Is there anything more decisive or have I overseen anything in my lines?

        Best wishes from Germany

One final point after 1. Nxd5 Rg8 2. Nxf6 Black can play 2. … Rg7 defending the mate and threatening both Knight and Queen if the Knight moves.

Best I can see there so far is 3. Rxh7+ Rxh7 4. Nxh7 when the Rh1# threat prevents Black regaining the piece.

        1. Rxh7+, Nxh7
        2. Rh1, any move
        3. Qh6 and mate to follow

If king takes instead of knight black still gets mated the same way.

Theme; the knight can’t take the queen because of the rook pin on black’s king.

        To Montague,

After Rh1 black plays Rg8 and then Rg7.
