Scholastic Chess Tournament not just child’s play for team competitors

PORTAGE — The basement of the Portage Yacht Club was bustling with silent activity recently, and a chess tournament might be the last guess for what was taking place.
“Chess is great,” said Paige Del Real, 8, a second-grader in the purple team T-shirt of the Montessori School in the Oaks Owls from Hobart.
Del Real and 159 other contestants had just finished their Saturday morning breakfast before hitting the boards for the first invitational Spring Scholastic Chess Tournament sponsored by her school.
Students ages 5 to 18 from more than two dozen public and private schools throughout Northwest Indiana, came to spend the day facing up to five opponents each in the game that has been synonymous with intellect and strategy since ancient times.
