The last two years have probably been the strangest, yet most rewarding in the career of Chess Grandmaster Vesselin Topalov. Despite his defeat by Vladimir Kramnik, Bulgaria’s Vesseling Topalov is still the chess master of the world, the latest FIDE rankings show. The chess federation published its ratings for January of 2007, and Topalov still holds the highest number of points (2783), although his loss cost him 30 points.
In 2005 he started by a third place in Courus and a disappointing performance in Dortmund. And he finished by taking the World Champion title in San Luis, Argentina by the amazing 1,5 points advantage. Adding to this the joint first place in Linares 2005 (where he defeated Kasparov in his last oficial game) and a victory in Mtel Masters 2006 he soon became top of the list with over 2800 rating.
The weirdest part in the latest events, however, came from Elista, Russia, where the world watched a one-month tense game – the unification match between Russia’s Vladimir Kramnik and Bulgaria’s Veselin Topalov. Surprisingly, it was not the chess skills that focused the limelight but … the toilets.

Question: Silvio Danailov wrote that he sent the World Chess Championship challenge to Mr. Kramnik. Did FIDE receive it, and what would be your commentary on the issue?
Ilyumzhinov: Yes, in December 2006 we received the challenge, proposing to conduct the match in Sofia. Everything was done according to our regulation, except there was no appropriate bank guarantee. The required amount in $1,500,000, and we are waiting for it. Upon receiving the guarantee, we will consider our future steps.
Question: Could you comment on recent accusations made by Mr. Topalov in his recent interview to the ABC?
Ilyumzhinov: [to give the core of very lengthy answer, full of reminiscences of the crisis] If you break open a wall, any wall, you’ll find tubes, cables, metal works, etc. After the wall in the toilet room was demolished everything inside and around it was thoroughly examined, and all parties signed the protocol stating that the issue is cleared and all complaints are recalled. The papers are in the FIDE office in Elista. Regarding Mr. Topalov’s words, that they stayed in Elista and kept playing just for the sake of getting their share of money – I think he is simply misinforming the audience. The money, naturally, was not in Elista, not in Moscow, not even in Russia. A significant part of it had been given to both parties involved before the match started, while the remaining for both players amount was kept in the Credit Suisse Bank. I think this is a solid and trustworthy bank. However, I heard that Mr. Danailov denied that the interview actually took place. So the situation is rather unclear for me.

There is nothing to read. No story to tell. Let us move on in life. I hope for the day when this topic stops coming up.
The other day I was thinking about the idea of ignoring trolls as being the solution to that problem. But my idea is that the problem is not with the trolls but with us for responding.
I now think this story has reached the point were the problem is now becoming us not Topalov. Let us ignore this topic and move on with our life. This story is like the Trolls. It just loves to stirr up controversey and get attention.

I would never purchase this book if it ever were to be printed. I would never contribute money to Topalov and especially Danailov. Purchasing such a book would be to finance Danailov.

topalov is the most exciting player on the planet! i want to see more of him and more of what he has to say. i trust him a lot more than kramnik.
I really do wish all the parties would just shut up and get on with promoting the next tournament they are playing in.
Surely that is what the sponsor of the next tournament they are playing in would prefer.

Did I say anything like that? Did I mention that the cable was connected to some implant at the board? Before you accuse me of creating a smoke screen you should better check what you are smoking.
there are only three matters of facts established by science so far…
first fact: women are more dumb than men!
second fact: Kramnik cheated to reach out for the chess world championship by use of a UTP-5 cable mounted in the ceiling of his private restroom!
third fact: the world is a plane disc!

This topic is dead, but for the fun of correcting the first paragraph of the article:
Topalov lost 30 points in two tournaments: Elista and Essent each cost him half of those thiry points.
There was a recent post here (true, I haven’t checked this) that some recent games played by Anand have not been included in the latest ranking, and that if they were included, they would place him 1 or 2 points *above* Topalov.

I doubt very much that any book will appear. There is nothing to say in the book.
Vohaul one must be careful when telling jokes. Some people might consider you serious and be offended by your 4 jokes. After all we all know the world is not a flat disc. It is a flat ellipse.

I doubt the book will be published. At any rate, Danailov doesn’t have much credibility in terms of keeping promises. Where is the required 1.5 MUSD guarantee for the Topalov-Kramnik match ?
Wait … if he doesn’t produce the required guarantee, and the “match” is “cancelled”, does this mean Danailov will automatically take over Illy’s job ? Might that be what Danailov is up to: “Vote for me. I can damage the reputation of chess as much as anyone”.
