      On track for 3rd GM norm

      Dimakiling on track for third GM norm

      MANILA, Philippines – Filipino International Master (IM) Oliver Dimakiling is still on track to earn his third and final Grand Master (GM) norm in the Indonesian Open Chess Championship 2012 at the Grand Sahid Jaya Hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia over the weekend.

      Dimakiling toppled Indonesian Fide Master (FM) Jowan Gunawan in the fourth round, then halved the point with Indonesian GM Susanto Megaranto in the fifth round.

      He now has a share of the tenth place with 3.5 points on account of three wins, a loss and a draw in five outings.

      “Sana mahawakan ko ‘yung momentum ko tungo sa third GM norm,” said Dimakiling, whose local and international chess campaign is backed up by sportsman Daniel Francisco of Makati.

      Dimakiling previously defeated Hasian Panggabean of Indonesia in the first round, then pulled an upset of GM Mikhail Krasenkow of Poland in the second. He lost to GM Merab Gagunashvili of Georgia in the third round, however.

      Tied with Dimakiling are: GM Dmitry Bocharov of Russia’ Gm Sergey Fedorchuk of Ukraine; GM Viorel Iordachescu of Modlova; Megaranto; IM Wang Chen of China; GM John Paul Gomez of the Philippines; IM Nguyen Doc Hoa of Vietnam; Wan Yunguo of China; GM Ehsan Ghaem Maghami of Iran; Gm Oleg Korneev of Spain; Gm Vladislav Tkachiev of France; FM Wei Yi and GM Xu Jun of China.

      Dimakiling had earned his first GM norm when he finished as co-champion in the Dato Arthur Tan Malaysia Open Chess Championship in 2006. He obtained his second GM norm during the 2012 National Open Chess Championships.

      GM Yu Yangyi of China assumed the solo lead with 4.5 points after routing GM Bocharov.

      Half a point behind Yu are: Gm Surya Shekhar Ganguly of India; GM Li Chao of China; Gagunashvili; GM Iavn Sokolov of the Netherlands; GM Lu Shanglei of China; GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam; GM Avetik Grigoryan of Armenia; and GM Boris Chatalbashev of China.

      Filipino chessers GM Richard Bitoon, GM Mark Paragua, GM Oliver Barbosa and FM Haridas Pascua are tied for 24th to 44th places with 3.0 points each.

      GM Eugene Torre is in a tie for the 66th to 82nd places with 2.0 points while FM Paolo Bersamina landed at 83rd to 92nd place with 1.5 points.
