      Prestigious playing hall

      http://www.axp.pt/noticias/2007_not/distr_individual_2007_not13

      Description:

Porto Regional Tournament – Final Stage was played in a great playing hall at Quinta de Santiago Museum. This was an amateur competion (average elo of about 1800 Fide points), without any subscription fee or prize money. Only the 32 best of 250 players that competed in 11 preliminary events were allowed to play for the title in this final stage. This is the way to dignify the game.

This is how chess should be played. No wonder why tournaments in other countries get tons of sponsorship while US players pay $400 in entry fees and $1,000 in hotels cost to win nothing while the organizer makes millions. Nice!

I don’t think it’s fair to attack the organizers of tournaments. It takes so much efforts to have tournaments like world Open and attract a large number of players around the world.
