The Mayor of Raleigh, North Carolina, Charles Meeker, announces Raleigh Chess Days February 18 – 20, 2011 in honor of the NC K-12 & Collegiate Chess Championship being held at the Raleigh Convention Center.

Proclamation by Mayor of Raleigh Charles Meeker-

“Whereas, Chess Achieves will host the 39th Annual North Carolina K-12 and Collegiate Chess Championship at the Raleigh Convention Center February 18 to the 20, of the year 2011; and, Whereas, the hard-working children of North Carolina have been studying and practicing chess; and, Whereas, the parents, teachers, school administrators, Chess Masters, Experts, and Coaches of North Carolina with their commitment to excellence in education have been sharing their knowledge and experience; and, Whereas, the great game of chess appeals to all ages, income levels, genders, and races; and, Whereas, chess helps grow scientific, disciplined and creative minds, builds confidence, increases focus, and rewards those willing to study and practice to improve; and, Now, Therfore, do I Charles Meeker, Mayor of the City of Raleigh hereby proclaim Friday, February 18, 2011 to Sunday, February 20, 2011, as Raleigh Chess Days and encourage all North Carolina chess players to come forth, play well, and prove their skill to earn the title of 2011 North Carolina Chess Champion. In Witness Thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the City of Raleigh, North Carolina to be affixed this First Day of February, 2011.”

Chess is a great way to help children develop a process for strategic planning, thinking under time pressure, and learning while having fun.

Many studies have shown that chess helps school children learn cognitive and non-cognitive skills. They learn cognitive skills such as counting, problem solving, and planning ahead. They also gain non-cognitive skills like learning to wait your turn patiently, building confidence, and how to win or lose gracefully.

Chess Achieves is a 501(c)(3) that promotes learning chess with lessons and community camps. They host tournaments to help children make a relationship between studying and practicing a subject to then applying what they have learned to show improvement.

Chess Achieves is hosting the biggest chess state wide tournament in North Carolina, 2011 NC K-12 and Collegiate Chess Championships.

Education, Coaching, and Scholastic Achievement will be the headliners at the largest chess tournament held at the Raleigh Convention Center. Over 1,000 students, coaches, volunteers, and parents will attend Scholarships for talented and gifted students will be available. Schools and colleges will participate in the event.

This year, Chess Achieves is working to help hundreds of parents and children learn, practice, and compete in chess. They are training new chess instructors to help grow chess in their area.
