Rare Deep-Sea Shark Caught on Film
      Reuters

TOKYO (Jan. 23) – A species of shark rarely seen alive because its natural habitat is 2,000 feet or more under the sea was captured on film by staff at a Japanese marine park this week.

The Awashima Marine Park in Shizuoka, south of Tokyo, was alerted by a fisherman at a nearby port on Sunday that he had spotted an odd-looking eel-like creature with a mouthful of needle-sharp teeth.

Marine park staff caught the 5-foot-long creature, which they identified as a female frilled shark, sometimes referred to as a “living fossil” because it is a primitive species that has changed little since prehistoric times.

thats one ugly looking thing. theres lots of freaky looking creatures deep in the ocean. they look like aliens from some other planet. ive seen even crazier looking animals than that one. theres probaly alot of deep sea creatures we never see that would make us think we know hardly anything about what lurks deep in our oceans.

I think the shark is exraordinarily beautiful. That is one great animal. I hope they allowed it to live in the wild.

Unfortunately it was quite weak when found and was brought to an aquarium in Japan where hopefully it could be healed and sent back to the wild. It died in captivity.

I think it is beautiful too.. wow it strange how it looks like a massive eel. i wonder why they called it a shark, is it cartilaginous, does it not have swim bladder does it have scales like sharks etc… also does it swim in the same motion as an eel does like side wiggles or does it wiggle up and down.. wiggle prob not the right term to use lol
