Record turnout for the 2010 Lubbock Chess Championships

The 2010 Lubbock Open Chess Championships took place on March 27 at Monterey High School. One hundred and 10 players, 6 to older than 60, from Midland to Amarillo, came to town to compete for the title of Lubbock Champion. This is the largest chess tournament each year in this region.

In the open division, members of the Knight Raiders dominated the field. International Master Gergely Antal, reigning national collegiate individual champion and member of the Texas Tech Knight Raiders A team, won the open section with a perfect 4-0 score. This is the second straight year that he won this title with a perfect 4-0 score.

Chase Watters (another member of the Knight Raiders A team) and Rebecca Lelko (member of the Knight Raiders women’s team) tied for second and third.

Chess is becoming very popular in Lubbock and many schools are being represented in this championship such as Frenship, Estacado, Alderson, Atkins, Murfee, All-Saints, Ramirez, Harwell, and Bozeman. I expect the number of participants will increase to more than 150 next year. Below are the top three finishers in each section:
