      Birthday Cake, Hitler

Store Refuses to Make Birthday Cake for Adolf Hitler
      by Sandy Maple Dec 16th 2008 2:00PM

Campbell, a self-proclaimed Holocaust denier, is outraged that the ShopRite grocery store in Holland Township, New Jersey refuses to make a cake that reads “Adolf Hitler” for his 3-year-old’s birthday. Campbell’s wife, 25-year-old Deborah is equally surprised. “ShopRite can’t even make a cake for a 3-year-old,” she said. “That’s sad.”

Is the store right for refusing to make a cake that reads Adolf Hitler? What is your take? What would you do if you are the owner of the bakery and you are faced with the same situation?

Here is my take on this whole thing birthday cake issue.

Yes, the parents are pretty stupid for naming their kid after a brutal dictator, and for not believing in the suffering and death of millions 60-70 years ago.

But don’t fault the child. The store should set aside their differences and do the honor of making that cake for the child, despite his being named after an awful person.

The store one way or the other will suffer, as they may lose business from the public, but they may also suffer from the parents as it could be an infringement issue over the First Amendment.

If they are unwilling to do the child this honor, they may need to get out of the cake making business for the benefit/or loss thereof for the public.

It’s a totally stupid issue to resolve or being involved in, as it’s issues like this that drag down the spirit of America and what we stand for.

I for one am a Republican who believes in conservative and traditional values, and abhor the idea of disallowing children the want of something simple. I don’t advocate the name of the child or the parents beliefs… but also think they have rights too.

        Sincerely,
        James H.

These parents are terrible and it is sad they are allowed to have children. How could they possibly develop with such kind of mindset?

I wish it was illegal to name a child in such a way.

        poor kid.
What kind of nutty parents are they ? I see other of there kids also has a crazy name according to news reports.

In my country there are rules on naming your children with crazy names, clearly this case shows that not such a bad idea.

I grow up disliking the name my parent choose for me, but looking at this it seems I didnt to to bad after all

Here in Quebec Canada, when parents submit the related doc to declare the birth of their baby, the office has the right to reject certain names that the parents try to name the baby.

When he reaches the age of majority the child can legally change his name to George Bush and moot out the problem.

I would deny the deniers…let them bake the cake themselves!

Whatever else it is, it is most definitely NOT a first amendment issue. One private citizen cannot force another to say or write something he or she does not want to say. The first amendment applies to government restrictions on free speech, not to an individual who refuses to say something even though someone named “Adolf Hitler” demands that they do so.

Unlike many other national gov’ts in the world, the US government does not have the power to dictate what you can or cannot name your own children. It is called “freedom of speech”, and it is more highly cherished there than anywhere else in the world.

No, that is not covered by “freedom of free speech we support people in their right to believe that other people should be murdered”. Your freedom ends where you take away the freedom of others and because you don’t condone hatred, doesn’t mean you end up in a Gulag.

I’m from Germany, so I can add two things.

The parents stated that they deny the Holocaust, they have swastikas displayed all over in their house and named their children these names. They would be in prison if they lived in Germany. Those things are considered ILLEGAL acts that are a threat to democracy and considered a crime against humanity.

The second, you are not allowed to name your child “flat tire” because you think that’s a pretty cool name for a child. You can name your child whatever name you wish, however, it has to be a name that is not likely to harm the child. The child is helpless, it can’t defend itself. That is why the state makes sure that the name fits the interest of the child.

1st and foremost I would sue you and your blog until you go bankrupt. Then I’d make you change your surname to Hitler, since you changed your name already.

Is the store right? This question should not even be asked- it is like asking is it right to refuse to encourage hatred?

Is it right that they should be arrested and have their children removed? All those swastikas and Nazi memorabilia is too much. Freedom can go too far- the children should be protected ateast.

A privately owned store making cakes certainly have the right to refuse to make any particular cake. The very most he will piss off the person who is trying to order that particular cake.

As for is a First Amendment issue? Of course not. In this case the First Amendment relates to the mother of the child. She can bake any cake and should have the right to write anything on it. No, it is not a First Amendment right to force a cake maker to write anything on a cake. That is downright silly.

What would I do? The exact same thing the cake maker did.

Did anyone notice that the family name was Campbell, not Hitler?

Believe me another Adolf Hitler will rise again.

Even now he’s got a lot of fanatics from the neo-nazis and the moslems.

Since the kids name was Adolf Hitler Campbell, they should have made the cake to say Adolf Campbell. Problem solved.

Yeah but the parents requested to have the controversial name to be on the cake so they would not accept Adolf Campbell (they don’t want people to sidestep the notoriety)
