I just received news from my friend Alexey Root that Texas Chess Association Secretary Robert Sturgeon had just passed away. He’s a good man and did many good things for chess in Texas. Our condolences to his family. If you knew Robert, please feel free to add your comments.

I am totally at a loss to read this. I was not aware that he was ill. I am really shocked, what happened? I could say so many positive things about him and yes, he contributed to Texas Chess in so many areas. He will be missed by all. We kept in touch in the last 2 years through email but I was completely unaware of a medical situation. Thanks for informing us Susan.

He has done a lot for chess in Texas. When the Permian Basin Chess Club organized its 1st Tournament in 2008, he drove from San Angelo to Odessa, TX just to help us out. Surely, he will be missed. RIP Robert.
Robert was my brother. He loved chess so much and I rarely talked to him on the phone without hearing him playing a chess game in the background. He cared for chess and people so much and was involved in a number of non-profit activities to promote chess and inspire children. He fought a long and courageous battle with a blood sepsis that caused him to double in size from retained fluid. Albeit, as big as he was at the end, his mass was dwarfed by the sheer size of his heart. He talked often of you Susan and we gave him several of your books this Christmas. We will be sending them with him to his final resting place. Thank you so much for meaning a lot to him. David Sturgeon
