      Rising Stars demolish the Experience

Amsterdam, Experience, Holland, NH Chess, Rising Stars

Round 2 – Experience vs. Rising Star

Wang Yue – Agdestein, Simen 1-0
Stellwagen, Daniël – Bareev, Evgeny 1-0
Cheparinov, Ivan – Jussupow, Artur 1-0
Caruana, Fabiano – Korchnoi, Viktor 1-0
      L’Ami, Erwin – Ljubojevic, Ljubomir ½-½

As I stated in an earlier post, I just simply do not understand the matchups. It is so lopsided on paper as well as in reality. After 2 rounds, the Rising Stars are leading by the score of 8.5 – 1.5! I hope things will be more even next year.

I would have liked to see rising stars such as So Wesley, Negi, Nepomniachtchi Ian, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Zhou Jianchao, Hou Yifan, Kateryna Lahno, etc. They would pair up much more fairly. Wang and Cheparinov are simply way too strong.

Super GM Nakamura said the following on ICC: “Is this some kind of bad joke?” and “It should be called ‘Let’s see what old guy can avoid losing every game'”.

It’s a slaughter. Very sad to see this kind of destruction.

        I agree with Nakamura.

I’m sorry, but the oldies play like little children really. They spill pawns and exchanges whenever something is under attack.
Let them play oldies like Garry and then we’ll see who’s sweating.

It’s unfair…the average ratings for each side is lopsided. The rising stars are higher rated.

Stellwagen beating Bareev is an upset. I’d like to see what happened there.

Some of the older players, in particular Ljubojevic and Jussupow, have little pratice as they do not play regularly anymore. Sure they only got invited for their merits, plus they had participated in past youth vs. experience events. This year the youth’s squad, thoug, is just so much stronger than in previous years that this is likely to be an onslaught to the veterans. I really hope they can put up somewhat more stiffer resistance in the upcoming games…

I like the idea of this tournament. However, the “Rising stars” ought to BE rising stars! If you are rated 2700, you are already a “star” in my book.

I agree Seth. More “rising” and less “star” please. Caruano is a good example of the kind of player that fits here. Cheparinov, not so much.
