      Candidates Tournament, Peter Svidler

Countdown to Candidates Five times Russian champion, Peter Svidler, and his road to the Candidates, reports Malcolm Pein

      By Malcolm Pein, Chess correspondent
      4:00PM GMT 13 Mar 2013

Peter Svidler, five times Russian champion, qualified for the Candidates tournament by winning the FIDE Grand Prix. See if you can find the devastating move that dispatched former Candidate Gata Kamsky at that event. I’ll give you a clue – 26…Qg3 which seems to win, is met by 27.Nc6:

      Position after 26.Nxb8

      Black to play and win

Round one of the Candidates takes place at the IET on Friday and tickets can be purchased at worldchess.com.

        1… Re2 looks like it’s working

        e.g.,
        2. Qxe2 Qg3 wins

        or
        2. Qc3 Rxf2 wins

aside: which game(s) will have a result (win/loss) in Round 1 Candidates? vote! http://goo.gl/86r7c

who will win Candidates 2013? rank your choices! http://goo.gl/AaNa9

susan, apologies for the aside; these polls are fun 🙂

        I am thinking Qg6 Nc6 Re2 followed by BxNc6 threatening mate on g2 or if Qc3 then Bxf2+ followed by Kh1 QxQc3 bxQc3 BxNc6 :/

Re2 should end matters by triple attacking f2 and deflecting the queen from covering the knight block at c6.

Without the hint it might have been very difficult. But somehow, the hint makes it so easy!

        1. … Re2!! 0-1

If Qxe2, Qg3 forces mate soon.

If not Qxe2, Black queen, rook & two bishops force the matters very quickly.

Svidler has a good chance to win.
