      Robert Hess: America’s newest GM

      Grandmaster, Robert Hess

After winning the SPICE Spring Invitational a few weeks ago, IM Robert Hess has scored his third and final GM norm in Connecticut.

He scored wins over GMs Ehlvest and Nakamura while drawing GMs Akobian, Shulman and Van Wely! He is now the newest American Grandmaster! Congratulations to GM-elect Hess!

After the SPICE Cup, Hess went 7-0 in the top section of the Supernationals to win the individual honor while leading his high school team to the national title! He clearly shows that he can tackle a physically demanding sport like football along with a vigorous academic curriculum at Stuyvesant high school while achieving excellent results on the chess board.

A truly impressive accomplishment by this down to earth young man! Here is my column in today’s Avalanche Journal about Robert Hess.

GM Yury Shulman 2697 and GM Darmen Sadvakasov 2611 tied for first. Sadvakasov won the blitz playoff.

What is even more impressive about Hess’s accomplishment is that he made GM while a student at one of the country’s most academically rigorous high schools, Stuyvesant High School in NYC. I’m also impressed that he came to SuperNationals last weekend to play for his high school team and lead them to a national championship.

Susan, is GM Hess not interested in going to TT for college? He will be a very good ingredient for a very formidable Texas Tech team in the future.

I think Hess has been admitted to Yale already.

He’s a junior in high school so I don’t think he’s been admitted to any college yet.
