      Saturday Open Forum

It is Saturday Open Forum! Carlsen is back in action tomorrow. He will attempt to defend his title at Biel. He defeated GM Onischuk in the blitz playoff last year after the pair were tied in the final standing. Here is the field this year:

      Magnus Carlsen NOR 2775
      Leinier Dominguez CUB 2708
      Evgeny Alekseev RUS 2708
      Etienne Bacrot FRA 2691
      Alexander Onischuk USA 2670
      Yannick Pelletier SUI 2569

Can Magnus break 2800 or earn the #1 ranking from this event? He is at 2791 right now based on the LIVE rating.

The Susan Polgar All-Star training will start Monday and the SP National Invitational for Girls will start next Sunday. Both will be held on campus at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.

What would you like to discuss this week? The forum is yours!

        Hi Susan,

As your motto is “Win with Grace, Lose with Dignity”, what is your opinion Vladimir Kramnik’s recent interviews about his upcoming match with Viswanathan Anand? Is it pyschological maneuvering, or sour grapes?

He needs 7.5/10 to break 2800.
6.5/10 he would stay around 2nd to 3rd with Ivanchuk on virtual list.

However he does, there is a long way to go until the October list (he is 6th on the July list) and anything can still happen eg he , Ivanchuk and Anand play in Bilbao. So even if he became virtual world number 1, it is not significant unless he keeps it for an official list. Ivanchuk might become virtual number 1 too- but no-one will call him former number 1 ever unless he gets an official number 1 rating- it is like a race for the next few months. Someone could get an early lead and drop back before the finishing deadline.

        Hi Susan:

Checking the chess.liverating.org web site you can see clearly that the top six chess players are beyond the usual superGMs (2700+). I have my own idea about the reason and, if it is possible, I wish to know your opinion.
Why? Because my idea links very well with one game that you won against Lubojevic years ago.
What do you think about the top six? What make the different with the other 2700+?
Can you share your ideas with us?

        Susan,

Does Carlsen have a corporate sponsor? Does FIDE promote corporate sponsorship for professional players or must players “starve” between matches?

Does the USCF have corporate promotional sponsorship opportunities for professional chess players?

        khollister,

        I believe it’s purely psychological.

Anon 1:33, hard work, diligence, and mental toughness. It’s who wants it more.

        kilometer,

I believe Carlsen does. I do not know the amount. There are opportunities for U.S. professional players, but I doubt that it will come from the USCF. The management has no interest in promoting chess or its top players.

        Best wishes,
        Susan Polgar

        Susan,

You have stated several times on your blogs that the USCF board will not accept the offers by you and Paul to help.

What help have you offered, when and in what way has the board refused the offers by you and Paul?

Goichberg and his gang must go. Time for new blood to run the USCF.

Carlsen is currently sponsored by FAST, a an internet search company that was recently purchased by Microsoft.

Do you believe that Fischer is dead?

Don’t be silly- you are confusing Fischer with Elvis. Elvis was the king, the most important piece in chess.

I think the Queen is hot!

Oh and her chess piece is ok too! 🙂
