Seeing things in Black and White

      Keti Grant, Scotland

Grandmasters see everything in black and white

      Published Date: 04 July 2009

THE Scottish Chess Championships were today set to be officially launched in the Capital.
Scotland’s only female grandmaster Keti Grant was among the chess players set to meet on the quadrangle outside the City Chambers to launch the event, which runs from 11-19 July .

So far 74 players have signed up for the championships including ten grandmasters and players from India, Slovakia and Iceland.

Lord Provost George Grubb said: “We’re delighted to be hosting the championships and it’s very fitting that Scotland’s Capital is playing host to this prestigious event during the year of Homecoming Scotland.

“We look forward to these championships being one of the most successful ever and hope that people take the opportunity to watch one of the many games taking place in the City Chambers. It should be a truly fantastic spectacle.”

Jonathan Grant, international director of Chess Scotland, said: “Strong players are coming to Edinburgh from far and wide for the 116th Scottish Championship.

“I’m looking forward to a highly competitive International Open event and hope it will inspire our promising juniors to become future Grandmasters.”
