Sen. Shane Massey opened the second Merriwether Mavericks Scholastic Chess Tournament, which was held April 10, by making the first move for Alex Thibodeau at Board 1.

Alex’s father, Billy, was one of several parents who praised the senator for his participation.

“It is really nice of Sen. Massey to take time out of his weekend to do this for the kids,” he said.

Merriwether Maverick’s coach, David Whatley, agreed, adding, “He helped to make the event extra special for those in attendance.”

With the first move behind them, students from the Merriwether area clashed with students from Abbeville, Greenwood and Atlanta in the four-round main event that featured plenty of sharp, tactical games.

Excellent sportsmanship was also plentiful throughout the day. Whatley, who served as an assistant tournament director, on two occasions actually overheard competitors helping their opponent.

“One of the distinctions enjoyed by chess is that it is a game of honor. Many players have an acute sense of fair play, and I’ve been fortunate enough to witness that many times,” he said.

Isaac Miller and Andrew Miller, both of Greenwood, battled fiercely in the non-rated section. Both players will receive premium U.S. Chess Federation memberships for their efforts.

There were three notable performances from local players. Tori Whatley swept the event turning in a perfect 4.0 (her first in 36 events). Alex Thibodeau won three of his four games, and David Bombard collected two points earning him second-place for elementary.
