MANILA, Philippines — Grand Masters (GMs) Wesley So and Eugene Torre will hold a rare simultaneous chess exhibition to challenge woodpushers’ problem-solving abilities and critical and strategic thinking.

The event, entitled “Maging Sino Ka Man” will be held on February 4 at the Meralco Canteen in the Meralco compound in Ortigas.

The one-day simultaneous chess exhibition of two of the Philippines’ GMs will raise funds for the benefit of the family of the late two-time Olympian and National Master Mirabeau Maga.

Maga suffered a cardiac arrest at 8 am at the East Avenue Hospital last December 26. He was 58.

“We do this to promote chess in the grassroots level,” said Torre, Asia’s first GM who has been the long-time vanguard of Philippine chess.

“Yung mare-raise na funds ay mapupunta sa pamilyang naiwan ni Kuya Maging (Maga),” So added.

National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) chairman Prospero Pichay Jr., NCFP executive director GM Jasyon Gonzales, tournament organizer Reginald Tee and Meralco Chess Club president Rolly Sol Cruz are expected to grace the affair.

Registration fee is P500. For inquiry, call or text 0918-929-8969 and 0908-880-7650 for complete details. — By Marlon Bernardino.
