      Solomon Chess Challenge

      Solomon Islands

      Chess challenge continues

      Wednesday, 22 April 2009
SOLOMON Islands Chess Federation (SICF) has organised a Chess tournament to decide the winner who will represent the country in the Oceania Zonal Chess Championship in Australia, June this year.

The tournament started last Sunday and will continue on April 25 and 26.

A total of 40 players took part in the competition featuring eight players in each of the five pools.

The winner and runners-up in each pool will proceed to the next stage, a qualifying round, which was scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday next week.

The winner of the tournament will proceed to represent Solomon Islands in the Oceania Chess Championship in Australia later this year.

The SICF Executive Committee will meet today to decide on the tournament prizes.

SICF’s Secretary Anthony Maelasi said the federation will soon kick off the Honiara Chess League and also conduct chess trainings for new and interested players.

“Those wishing to take part in the Honiara Chess League are encouraged to start registering their clubs with the federation”, he said.

Chess is a newly formed federation in the country and is a growing sport amongst young people and students in particular, according to the Chess federation official.

SICF hosted the official launching of their constitution last Thursday in Honiara.

It reflects the fast growing development of the sports here in the country.
