      Son wins national chess event

Grandmaster Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son won the men’s singles of the National Youth Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships which wrapped up in HCM City yesterday.

Son from Kien Giang Province gained 12.5 points with 12 wins and one draw in the blitz discipline section.

Hanoians Nguyen Van Huy and Dao Thien Hai finished second and third, respectively .

Son, who bagged a silver medal at the Young Grandmaster Tournament as part of the 43rd Biel International Chess Festival last July, also won the men’s singles of rapid discipline.

In the women’s event, Can Tho’s Pham Le Thao Nguyen took the title, followed by Hoang Thi Nhu Y of Thua Thien-Hue and Pham Bich Ngoc of Kien Giang.

In the men’s team event, HCM City defeated Da Nang in the final. Kien Giang and the Army shared the bronze medal.

Meanwhile, Ha Noi defeat Bac Giang to grab gold in the women’s team event. The bronze medal went to Thua Thien-Hue and HCM City.

Despite missing key player Le Quang Liem, who won the recent Aeroflot Open, the HCM City team triumphed at the championships with three golds, four bronzes.

Ha Noi was second with two gold and three silver while Kien Giang was third with two golds and three bronzes.

The event, which began last Friday, attracted nearly 200 chess players from 20 cities and provinces. It aimed to choose the best chess players to compete in the 26th Southeast Games in Indonesia in November. – VNS
