
Asian Chess: So faces tough challenge from region’s best

MANILA, Philippines—Filipino sensation Grandmaster Wesley So faces a tough challenge from equally talented foreign players competing in the 2010 Asian Individual Chess Championships starting Wednesday at the Subic Exhibition and Convention Center.
The 16-year-old So, the country’s top player with an ELO rating of 2665, is seeded fourth in the nine-round tournament being hosted by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and supported by the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, Department of Tourism, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office.
Reigning Aeroflot Open champion GM Le Quang Liem of Vietnam is the top seed with an ELO of 2689, followed by GM Krishnan Sasikiran of India (ELO 2686) and GM Ni Hua of China (ELO 2667).
NCFP president Prospero “Butch” Pichay is expected to make the ceremonial moves with SBMA administrator Armand Arreza during the 2 p.m. opening ceremony.
Philippine Sports Commission chair Harry Angping will deliver the inspirational remarks.
