      SPICE Cup Round 3 Results

Lubbock, SPF, SPICE, SPICE Cup, Texas Tech, TTU

Here is the link to over 200 pictures from the SPICE Cup 2010.

I would like to thank Chessdom.com, ChessBomb.com, MonRoi.com, ICC (ChessClub.com), PlayChess.com, TWIC, Chess.com, ChessToday.net, and many more chess media sources for covering the SPICE Cup. The fighting spirit so far has been tremendous in both group A and B.

In a few days, a group of chess playing students from Norway (from the same school as Magnus Carlsen), headed by my friend GM Simen Agdestein, will arrive in Lubbock for about 10 days. In addition to participating in the SPICE Cup FIDE Rated Open (November 5-7), they will also participate in many other local non-chess activities. Various local families, including a number of Norwegian families in Lubbock, TX, will host the players. This will be a wonderful experience for everyone and I am looking forward to welcoming our Norwegian friends.

      Round 3 results:

IM Ippolito is on pace for GM norm with a draw against the tournament leader GM Antal today. He needs +2 in the next 6 rounds. After 2 tough losses to start the tournament, FM Yang beat GM Finegold, last year’s B group co-champion, to get back on track for the IM norm. He needs an even score in the final 6 rounds.

      Group B

      Diamant 1/2 Smith
      Kuljasevic 1/2 Krush
      Yang 1-0 Finegold
      Rensch 0-1 Bykhovsky
      Ippolito 1/2 Antal

So jumped ahead of the field in the A group with a win against Robson today. After not being able to record a single win last year, So scored 2 straight wins this year in round 2 and 3.

      Group A

      Almasi 1/2 Meier
      So 1-0 Robson
      Onischuk 1-0 Perelshteyn

Terrible game by Robson. Playing 9..d5 and having no clue how to continue was depressing to watch.

Anyway, during the last year he’s not been showing much progress which seems somewhat surprising for a boy of his age and potential. He may not be 2700+ material but he can certainly enter the Top 100 avoiding such naive losses like today in the future.

But of course Robson was playing a potential 2700 player Wesley So.

And Robson lost to Almasi who is over 2700.

Not yet in their class but he will learn from these losses.

It’s sick that the USCF hardly covers the biggest round robin tournament of the year, one with 9 American players participating. Of course all the space will be used to cover all events by the USCF Mafia Boss Bill Goichberg, the most corrupt chess politician in US history.
