      Chess Federation Tournaments
      December 17, 2010

      ST. CROIX – The next USVI Chess Federation event is the St. Croix Scholastic Open Tournament on Saturday starting at 8.30 a.m. at Manor School.

      The USVI Chess Federation will also host the USVI National Open Scholastic Chess Tournament on Feb. 19 and 20 at Manor School. All USVI students under the age of 18 are welcome to participate. Please call Margaret Murphy for more information at 332-6440.

      The USVI Chess Federation is a member of the V.I. Olympic Committee and FIDE – the World Chess Federation. These tournaments are being run by members of the 2010 USVI Chess Federation World Chess Olympiad Team, who recently returned from the 2010 World Chess Olympiad in Siberia.

      Cane Bay 5-Mile Road Race

      ST. CROIX – The annual V.I. Pace Runners Cane Bay 5-Mile Road Race will be held on Saturday at 7 a.m. The race will start and finish at Cane Bay beach on North Shore Road. These races are open to all.

      Pre-Christmas scholastic chess tournament

      ST. THOMAS – The V.I. Institute for Teaching and Learning will host a pre-Christmas Scholastic Chess Tournament on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Lockhart Elementary School.

      Players will compete in four-round individual competition in three age categories: 9 and Under, 12 and Under, and 13 and older. All V.I. elementary, middle school or high school students are eligible to compete. Trophies will be given to the top three players in each category.

      Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. on the day of the tournament. There is no entry fee for students. For details, call Sinclair Wilkinson at 514-7054
