      Written by Phillip Corry

The stage is set for the second phase of the World Chess Olympiad Qualifiers to be held on 3-4, 8 and 10 March 2012 at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel in Kampala as local players battle for places on the national chess team.

The top 12 finishers after the second phase of the qualifiers will qualify to proceed to the third and last phase of the qualifiers to be held in April at which four players will be picked (in the men’s category) to join National Chess Champion, Arthur Ssegwanyi who has already qualified for the team.

There will also be competition in the ladies category to pick the top 12 to proceed to the last phase which will also be held in April. After the last phase (in the ladies category), four players will be picked to join National Ladies champion, Grace Kigeni who has already qualified for the team.

At this weekend’s games, on-form Olympian Harold Wanyama is expected to lead the challenge and battle for places in the last 12 alongside the likes of Junior Champion, Haruna Nsubuga, Shadrack Kantinti, Kenneth Kakooza and Geofrey Kanduho among others.

In the ladies category, you would expect Olympians Ivy Amoko, Phiona Mutesi, Rita Nsubuga and City Chess Club’s Christine Namaganda to book their places into the last phase.

The 40th World Chess Olympiad is due to be held in Istanbul, Turkey from 27th August to 7th September 2012.

This is another of your many stories in which you do not identify the country. How difficult is it to do that? It would make sense to me.
