      November 9, 2010, 5:06pm

MANILA, Philippines — Stephen Rome Pangilinan of Christian Ecclesiastical School-Bulacan won the Art Borjal Awardee being the youngest finalist at eight-years-old during the 2010 Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship Grand Finals held recently at the Event Center of SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.

Despite Pangilinan’s young age, he has displayed maturity and wisdom in the tournament, setting an example to other aspiring young players of the annual awaited chess tournament. He finished with 3.5 points in the 9-round Swiss system format tournament.

Pangilinan was Northern Luzon leg’s champion in the Kiddies division where he won all of his nine games during the 2-day tournament. At this young age, he is already seasoned in international chess competitions. In 2009, he triumphed over 36 other players from around the world in the Las Vegas International Chessfest in the Susan Polgar under eight year old division.
