Students think their way across chess board

TUPELO – The rules of chess include some fairly simple requests: Don’t talk during a game, do shake hands with your opponent and don’t touch a piece unless you know where it’s going.
Before a team chess tournament began at Carver Elementary on Thursday afternoon, however, Kenneth Griswold had more advice for players.
“First and foremost, have fun,” said Griswold, a Lawndale Elementary chess coach who helped organize the tournament for fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders from Carver, Lawndale and Milam elementaries.
