Bakcell supports development of children’s chess in Azerbaijan

      21 October 2011, 16:38 (GMT+05:00)

      Azerbaijan, Baku, Oct.21

Bakcell, the First Mobile Operator in Azerbaijan, was pleased to support the next International Children’s Chess Tournament in Baku. Held at Odlar Yurdu University from Oct.9 to 14, the Sixth International Children`s Chess Tournament was collaboratively organised by Azerbaijan Chess Federation and “British School” in Baku. 54 young chess players representing Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Turkey, Poland, France, Iran, India and the Republic of Southern Africa competed in this year’s tournament.

The young participants played in two different groups and three players in each group won the tournament. The 1st group winners were Zaur Bayramov (Azerbaijan, 1st place), Jeyhun Huseynzade (Azerbaijan, 2nd place) and Narmin Mammadova (Azerbaijan, 3rd place). Aysu Ismayilova (Azerbaijan, 1st place), Martin Parvanov (Bulgaria, 2nd place) and Khadija Shabanova (Azerbaijan, 3rd place) became the winners of the 2nd group games. Bakcell awarded the winners with Nokia mobile handsets to stay connected to their family and friends. We are proud to mention that five out of six winners of this large scale international tournament were Azerbaijani children, who during six days have successfully competed against young merited players from Europe, Asia and Africa.

Bakcell views sponsorship of children’s chess as an important corporate social responsibility initiative aiming to contribute to the mental and intellectual development of children and youth. Since 2006, Bakcell has provided support to organising 12 local and international chess tournaments among children held in Azerbaijan in close collaboration with Azerbaijan Chess Federation. These tournaments create a great chance for Azerbaijani children to become self-confident, demonstrate their talent, represent their country, get known internationally and prove that there is a tremendous potential for building a bright future in Azerbaijan. As part of its well-thought out Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative Bakcell supports advancement of various educational activities in Azerbaijan aimed at developing children’s talent and character. Within the “Bakcell Stars” CSR program, Bakcell currently finances “Healthy Initiatives through Play” project for schoolchildren to promote development of children’s theatre in Azerbaijan, “Arts Communication” to help children with physical and learning difficulties communicate through arts, “Children’s Choir”, “Children’s Dance Ensemble” with children at SOS Children’s Villages and “Sports for Development and Inclusion” for children with hearing and speech impairment. Bakcell truly believes that every child is a star and their dreams can come true!
