Kids learn the ‘right’ moves at Port Orange library’s Chess Club

PORT ORANGE – It was all about making the right moves during the Chess Club meet at the city library one recent Friday afternoon.
Although usually well attended, this particular meet was a small group of three which gave each player ample time to consider their moves.
Michael Hayes, 8, of Ormond Beach, was one of the players who silently contemplated the board and considered all of his possibilities before making that fateful move.
“My friend Oliver taught me how to play, and the Church Club,” Hayes said.
“The main thing you want to do in chess is attack the opponent’s King,” Kai Tabor, 16, of Port Orange said, giving his sage advice.
“Or at least work towards it,” Frank Rollins, 63, the chess instructor, added.
The Chess Vlub is for children of all ages who want to learn to play the game or want to be challenged to improve their game.
“We’ve had as many as 15 kids here playing, as young as 4 or 5 years old,” said Children’s Librarian Thomas Jonte.
Chess enthusiasts claim children who learn the game may improve decision-making skills, as well as attention and focus on a task, which can result in better test scores.
According to Jonte, the Chess Club meets were started by Steve Lampkin about five years ago and are regularly attended on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. and Fridays at 3:30 p.m. in the children’s section of the Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle.
