      The American phenom Darwin Yang

      Knight Raiders, Lubbock, SPICE, Spice Spring Invitational, Texas Tech, TTU


      Darwin Yang will participate in the 2010 SPICE Spring Invitational at Texas Tech University. Here are some of the fun facts about this young phenom:

      Darwin started learning Chess in the Summer of 2004.
      In 2005, he won 2005 National Youth Action and K-12 National Championship ( 3rd grade)
      In 2006, he won Texas Elementary Championship.
      By winning the Pan-American Championship in Ecuador (U-10), FIDE awarded him the FM title. (Ray Robson got his FM in 2005 at the same event )
      In 2008, he finished 2nd at National Junior high Championship.
      He won the Bronze medal at 2009 World Youth Championship in Vietnam (U-12).
      In the January 2010 FIDE list, Darwin is ranked 87th in the US, 5th in the world and 1st in Continental America for U-14.
      He has been 1st at his age group in the US for many years. He has been selected All-American team four times.
      Darwin likes all kinds of sports, especially football, and plays for his school. He also likes reading, history, math and video games. He is currently a 7th grader at Rice Middle School in Plano, TX.

      The 2010 SPICE Spring Invitational will take place in March (13-19) at the beautiful campus of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX.

      – IM Gabor Papp (HUN) 2578 USCF – 2542 FIDE (GM norm) – Texas Tech Student
      – GM Julio Becerra (USA) 2610 USCF – 2538 FIDE (2-time participant of the SPICE Cup)
      – GM Ben Finegold (USA) 2616 USCF – 2533 FIDE (earned GM title at 2009 SPICE Cup B group)
      – IM Gergely Antal (HUN) 2557 USCF – 2511 FIDE (2 GM norms) – Texas Tech Student
      – GM Jesse Kraai (USA) 2550 USCF – 2508 FIDE
      – IM Dean Ippolito (USA) 2534 USCF – 2465 FIDE (Previous participant of the SPICE Cup)
      – IM Irina Krush (USA) 2492 USCF – 2460 FIDE (GM norm – previous participant of the SPICE Cup)
      – FM Eric Hansen (CAN) 2426 USCF – 2406 FIDE
      – FM Darwin Yang (USA) 2398 USCF – 2369 FIDE (Youngest ever participant of a SPICE Invitational)

      Average FIDE rating: 2488.5

      GM norm is expected to be 6 points (out of 9 games) and IM norm is expected to be 4 points (out of 9 games).
