The more games the talented Wesley plays against world class opponents, the better and more confident he gets. After losing to Guisenov in the second game of his first round match, he reeled off 3 straight wins in the rapid playoff to advance to the second round. Then he went on to pull off the biggest upset of the 2009 World Cup so far by beating Ivanchuk 1.5-0.5. Well done Wesley! With proper training, experience, and opportunity, I have no doubt that he will be an elite player for years to come.

Congrats Wes!
Good luck!
Bersamina Family
Good luck Wesley in the next round!
Wolverine, remember you owe Wesley and the Filipinos an apology.
That is if you are a real man, or a feline with no back bone.
Else you will be hunted in Vancouver, Canada, defanged and neutered.
Ivanchuk has a bad record in knockouts. He’s lost to nobodies before.
I wouldn’t read to much into So’s win.
I do think events like this underscore the degree of rating inflation that exists at the top.
I flat out don’t believe that Topalov would score at that rating level if he played a bunch of 2600’s.
That is a lame excuse sore loser Anos. Wesley So is SOMEBODY.
He beat Ivanchuk fair and square. No luck, not an inebriated Ivanchuk. Mano a mano.
Your comment shows your lack of appreciation and understanding for the young talents whose minds are far more superior than you and your forbears.
I agree that the ratings of the top players are sheltered somewhat by only players other top guys. If players like Topalov, Leko, and Moro had to play 2500-2600 players they would soon find themselves 100 rating points less than where they were. I have great respect for the “high 2600” grandmaster who isn’t invited to all the exclusive tournaments and needs to play opens.
hehe. yall too much! Susan stop teachin the Qui Lo!! hahaha. Loved thoses cat pictures Susan Ultrathanks! Kasparov says i dont exist, i guess cuz im not physically in their events but do you think there is more than one what to take pictures of cats? hahahaha.
Congrats! keep the winning strek alive. May your exploits in the World Cup of Chess will inspire other Filipino young chess players…Correos Family
SOMEONE can’t read.
I said that Ivanchuk has lost to nobodies in the PAST; therefore, So’s win doesn’t mean as much as, say a win over Svidler.
Obviously So is talented and smart.
It’s a shame he’s wasting his intellect on a dead game, but good luck to him, all the same!
While it certainly is a surprise that So knocked out Ivanchuk, it is not the biggest upset. Sakaev eliminating Radjabov is a little bigger upset, or Laznicka eliminating Morozevich clearly 2-0. But the biggest upset of them is still Yu Yangyi (2527) eliminating Sergei Movsesian (2718).
So far Yu Yangyi is the biggest surprise in this World Cup, and not only because he eliminated Movsesian. He made it look easy to come in 3rd round, and he did it by being outranked by 200 and 100 points.
Ano, one of those “nobodies” is Liviu Dieter Nisipeanu, who eliminated Ivancuck in 1999 WCh (and later reached 2700) and again in 2007 WCup 🙂
Hopefully So will reach this level and again hopefully he will be invited in XX category tournaments
Don’t let up Wesley. Like Manny Pacquiao, don’t get cowed by the bigger boys and knock them out one by one.
Kung kaya ni PacMan, kaya mo rin!
The other “nobodies” who beat Ivanchuk in the past at knockout events were Seirawan, Ehlvest, Kasimdzhanov (eventual winner of this KO WCh) and Cheparinov. Still Ivanchuk self-destructed in some of these games – also yesterday it was madness to decline a perpetual check with so little time left on the clock (2 minutes plus increments for 17 moves).
BTW, in the next round So will face Gata Kamsky.
In the final analysis, Ivanchuk is more suited to a drawn out 10 match play set up, where he would be hard to beat, than a knockout format.
He had a history of “nerves”, which could be hindering his play during pressure situations during this 2 game knockout format.
My 2 cents.
The ‘nobodies’ blog was just Wolvering making asinine comments as usual.
Give credit to the deserving winners, where ever they are from.
They all worked hard, and had to go through tough qualify tournaments to play in the World Cup.
We hail all the winners, and wish them all the best.
“With proper training, experience, and opportunity, I have no doubt that he will be an elite player for years to come.”
Who wouldn’t be an elite player under those conditions?
Those with no talent, like you, anon 12:17.
Guys wake up, will ya!
When Ivanchuk first won Linares, Wesley So was not born. Who deserves more credit here? So or Ivanchuk?
Wesley So is the real deal.
He will be on the way home after the next round.
I agree So has to be take seriously, but one has to admit Chucky handed it to him in the first game when he refused to take the perpetual check.
So defended well in both games, but didn’t deserve more than 2 draws in them objectively.
Which in itself is a very good result by Wesley. Goodluck to him.
typical flips now claiming there the greatest chess nation the world has ever seen after one of there players gets lucky to get a win over ivanchuk who could have easily got a perpetual draw if he chose to do so.
at least he didnt play it safe and went for the win which isnt what your flip player did. he took the eays way out and just hung on for the draw. i owe you losers nothing. bring it on losers.
i guess these idiots are allowed to taunt me while im not allowed to say anything back. a greater mind than mine. lmao..if you doubled your IQ flip mine would still be higher thans yours. everyone knows you guys brag more than anyone else on the earth.. this is a proven fact..
you say anything that they dont like and theyll gang on you like the cowards they are.. theyll never fight you one on one.. bring it on flips. anytime anywhere one on one.. this guy cant even spell the name right. its wolverine not wolvering and its not a feline you backwoods hillbilly ingrate..
I will say that I have no problem with So winning against ivanchuk.i like seeing new talent come up through the ranks. its these people that get on here and have to brag that now there country is the best chess nation on earth.. you shouldnt have to brag and start yelling about how good you are. your actions should speak for themselves..
Sa mga Noy-pi, huwag nyo nang sagutin ang baklang ito, sayang lang ang panahon. Maliwanag namang walang utak. Puro galit lang siya, walang katwiran. Nagulpi siguro ng isang Pinoy nung araw, kaya nagtatapang-tapangan kunwari.
to all you flips..please don’t gang up on wolverine…..he’s my neighbor in vancouver..he was castrated by his father when he was young…pleae be nice to him….he is an x-man
ta all you flips…don’t gang up on wolverine, he’s my neighbor in vancouver bc…he was castrated by his father when he was young…be nice to him ..he’s an x-man
Filipinos brag a lot. It’s just in our nature.
“if you doubled your IQ flip mine would still be higher thans yours. everyone knows you guys brag more than anyone else on the earth.. this is a proven fact..”
A proven fact? Oh… I don’t know about that, sounds like there’s at least one guy who brags more than a lot of filipinos i know and i’d think twice before making any brash generalizations like that… and about us refusing to fight you one on one, it’s EASY to say you’ll fight anyone anywhere when there’s thousands of miles separating you from the person you’re saying you want to beat on, isn’t it? to everyone, why don’t we just stop with all the bravado and macho posturing and just congratulate the winners, commiserate with the losers and enjoy whatever happens in the Cup?

Way, way, way out of line. and enough with the gay slurs please, it’s childish and makes you look like an unimaginative bigot.
