Approximately 19,000 chess enthusiasts from almost 120 countries followed my LIVE commentary right here during the Magnus vs. the World game earlier today. This is without any advertisement anywhere else other than with the regular readers of my blog, facebook, and twitter.
This is the highest number for a non-world championship game. The Netherlands led the way, followed by the U.S., Germany, Norway, and France.
The highest number on my site for a single LIVE game commentary is over 140,500 people for the final game of the Anand – Topalov world championship.

I LOVED the live commentary – getting snatches of it while I was at work 🙂 I do not think there is any secret to your blog’s success, Susan. You have worked hard to put up news and information from all over the world and yours may have been the first to do this on a consistent basis. In fact, it was your blog that inspired us at create our own. Building up a fan base takes time, patience, and a devotion to keeping up quality and consistency in content. I know that many Asians follow Susan’s blog, but curiously, no Asian country was interested in Carlsen.
I wonder if the figures would be different if this game was held at another time of day? For example at times that would be convenient for those in SE Asia.

I don’t believe the time would have made much difference. Carlsen’s so-called “international appeal” is really limited to the West. If the 3 World experts had been Asian GMs, perhaps Wang Yue, Le, and So, that would have pulled some Asian audience.

Magnus has been very good for chess and I am sure chess has been very good to him. When Garry Kasparov retired in 2005 there was great concern about the future of chess. Magnus together with Anand and many others have shown that the future of chess is very much secure!
