A legal move from Karpov
First, here is the entire text distributed by White & Case, which is representing the Karpov campaign and many major chess federations in the matter.
“Pursuant to the letter of their counsel, White & Case, sent on 2 July 2010 to FIDE Executive Director David Jarrett, the national chess federations of France, Germany, Switzerland, Ukraine and the United States, along with Karpov 2010, Inc., will imminently file a Request for Arbitration against FIDE with the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland. In view of confidentiality restrictions, no further information can be provided until further notice.”
No further information, but perhaps some speculation based on their recently published demand for Ilyumzhinov’s campaign documents by the same White & Case team. It would appear that they are intent on proving that the nominations of Kirsan Ilyumzhinov for FIDE president and of Beatriz Marinello for FIDE Vice President are not legitimate. If the Lausanne court rules this to be the case, it could disqualify the Ilyumzhinov ticket completely and turn this September’s FIDE election in Khanty-Mansiysk into a one-horse race with Karpov as the only candidate. If Ms. Marinello is disqualified that alone would disqualify the entire Ilyumzhinov ticket, since according to the regulations one candidate must be a woman and the Chilean-born American is the only woman on the ticket and the deadline for nominations has passed.

Why is the USCF in this lawsuit? Who authorized it? What’s the reasoning behind it? How will it effect American players when Karpov and the USCF lose this case? Is this the kind of tactic we can expect by the USCF in the future? Why is the USCF going after Beatriz Marinello, a USCF member and former President of the Federation? Is this more dirty and disgusting chess politics by Bill Goichberg and his mindless sycophants? So many questions, not enough answers.
If you can’t beat them, sue them. This is the method used in the past by the USCF. Sick!

Candidate for Vice-President: Alisa Maric
Nominating federation: Serbia
Bio: One of the greatest-ever players from the mighty chess nation of Serbia, Maric is an IM and WGM and has been among the top few women players in the world for two decades, with excellent performances at world championships and team events. She was winner of prestigious national awards such as National Sports Award 2007, National Saint Sava Award 2007 and Belgrade’s October Award 1988. She was member of the Presidential Board of Olympic Committee of Serbia. She is Vice President of Belgrade Chess federation.
Maric studied Economics at the University of Belgrade, received a Ph.D and has been teaching since 2003. From 2005 to 2008 she was Professor of Marketing at University Braca Karic and since 2008 she has been Professor of Marketing at University Megatrend. She is author of the textbook “Principles of Marketing”. She was a member of European Olympic Committee Working Group “New Ways of Communication” and attendee of the International Olympic Academy in Olympia.
