Before the many memorable matches between Karpov and Kasparov, there were the original K-K battles between Korchnoi and Karpov – Remember which year is this?
No it was in 1974. Karpov won a long hard-fought match. But they also played a training match a few years earlier. Korchnoi told Karpov which opening he would play before the game, so Karpov could prepare. I think it was drawn.
Yeah, this can’t be the original KK battle. Even leaving out the training match played in Korchnoi’s living room. Korchnoi was still under the Soviet flag in their 1974 Candidates Final Match. It’s the original KK world championship battle, though.
At least I think it is. The playing hall doesn’t look like Baguio, and Korchnoi looks a bit older. You know, I think this picture might be from their 1981 Meran match.
I think it is it is Merano, NOT Moscow or Philippines
1) Korchnoi plays under the Swiss flag. As far as I remember, in 1978 theere were no flags on the table (Baturinski argued that Korchnoi was not a Swiss sitizen and his team did not represent Swiss federation either. Campomanes decided to remove the flags from the tables)
2) there is a glass wall between the players and spectators. The wall was not there in 1978 (in Merano, it was installed to prevent incidents similar to confrontation of Korchnoi and Zuhar or involvment of occult sect members and so on)
Yes, that’s true, now that you mention it. Korchnoi’s offer to play under the Jolly Roger was rejected. So that settles it, this is Meran 1981; their final match.
And the hall still looks totally different from any Baguio pictures out there.
Was that in 1978 ?

Notice Korchinoy is playing for Switzerland…

Korchnoi wated to play under Jolly Roger? Cool joke. Better than Ananda Marga 🙂
I think it’s a shame neither keres nor Korchnoi were ever world champion.
