      Candidates Arrive in Elista

      Delegations arrived by charter flight last night in Elista for the Candidates Matches. FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov heads the Opening ceremonies today. Both rounds of the Candidates Matches for the 2007 World Championship Tournament will take place in Elista, 26 May – 14 June 2007.

      The prize fund for each match of both rounds will be USD 40,000. Go to the page of the Candidates Matches, see Rd 1 pairings. From the 16 Grandmasters, the top 4 will qualify for the 2007 World Chess Championship Tournament in Mexico, 11 September – 1 October, joining the defending World Champion Vladimir Kramnik (RUS) and GMs Vishy Anand (IND), Peter Svidler (RUS), Alexander Morozevich (RUS) who have already qualified from the previous World Championships.

        wow this is exciting

        my predictions are that judit, kasim, aronian and grishuk will qualify for mexico but the best of luck to everyone! may the best man/woman win!

        How come Mamedyarov, Radjabov, Ivanchuk or even Navarra not playing? They are a lot higher rated than Bareev or Gurevich…
        fide politics again?

        All this was decided in the 2005 Fide World Cup in Khanty Mansk, Russia.

        I wonder how much of the Kalmyk people’s money the dictator Kirsan tapped for this latest exercise in self-aggrandizement?

        Regardless, I want to see both Judit and Gata go to Mexico. This should be an exciting event.
