The state of the USCF according to ED Bill Hall

      USCF issues

For many years, many of us have echoed the same issue that the USCF ED Bill Hall just addressed the USCF delegates at the 2007 USCF Delegates Meeting. The USCF has had a very hard time finding sponsors due to the behaviors and conducts of some of the USCF members. Why not work together and behave properly and professionally instead of the constant attacks and insults, especially on the USCF forums? He described the behavior of children at the elementary chess championships better than some of the posters there. All the bickering and politicking is not doing chess any good.

Mr. Hall reminded everyone that last year, the USCF tried to give away free valuable ad space to two major companies and their answer was NO. This is just one of the major reasons why Susan and I decided to run for the USCF Executive Board. There is something wrong when the SPF can find 20-30 sponsors for our events while the USCF is having a hard getting sponsorship. It all comes down to proper marketing, promotion and professionalism.

The status quo must go and it is a new era for an energized USCF. We must respect each other and work with one another for chess and the USCF to succeed. We will continue to update everyone with what’s going on at this meeting.

I agree with Mr. Hall. The behavior of some of the people on the forums is deplorable.

Let’s be real. The USCF issues forum has become a joke. The loudest voices prevail. The three loudest and most active participants have an average rating south of 1500. They shout everyone else down so that most people walk away holding their noses and rolling their eyes. Gossip, innuendo and hearsay rule the day. Now the USCF is making the forum more accessible but without any idea of how to moderate. They all act as if they are afraid of the Massachusetts lawyer who joined in January will sue them.

It was last year that the Chess Life ads were offered. Not sure of the exact time frame but probably over 12 months ago. Even if it was last December, that was before the current state of the USCF forums. So how can you blame the forums for that problem?

The USCF forums cost sponsorship opportunities this year. That’s the point that he made very clearly.

The big plan and discussion is to make the Forums more accessable to everyone. They are going to kill the USCF. The people at the Forums have no clue to what they are doing. Selfish little children who play a game all their life. Never wanting to grow up and be an adult.

It will be made more accessable because the programmers are almost ready with the software to make it more accessable. There is no way to stop it from happening. Look out everyone. Chess is in for a rough ride.

All the opposition still opposes Susan. Nothing has changed.

Do you think opening up the USCF issues forum is a good idea? It’s an embarrassment. A bunch of mediocre chess players with way too much time on their hands. I wouldn’t worry too much though. Now a wider audience will get to laugh at these buffoons.

Well, at least those buffoons are identified and do not hide behind anonymity.

Look, those forums have people from both sides saying what they think. There is one fellow that claims to be supportive of Susan and Paul. This guy is actually more harmful to them than some of the opposition.

Understand, I am not opposition to any side. I have had personal communications with Paul and my last 3 or more posts regarding them have been telling this opposition to quit their incorrect harping. I am supportive of people that promote quality chess in this land. It’s that simple.

Opening the forums would actually be good. The people that post ridiculous things will be seen for what they are, not sane, intelligent psople for chess.

Apparently in any large group there are always a few people who will feed the trolls.
        There is no stopping them.

Imagine if McDonald’s was stupid enough to have a “McDonald’s Issues” forum. It would be an “attractive nuisance” drawing in mostly vicious condemnations of fast food.

There are better ways to achieve the communication goal originally targeted by the USCF Issues forum, but they are more expensive.
