      Anand’s struggle continues

India’s Vishwanathan Anand continued to struggle at the Chess Masters in Bilbao after he drew against tournament leader Vassily Ivanchuk on Saturday.

Of the last eight games that he has played, this is Anand’s sixth draw. This result added to Ivanchuk’s tally in the tournament taking him to 14 points.

Anand started off well but Ivanchuk did well to pressurize Anand’s central backward pawn. 58 moves later, Anand was able to draw the game and avoid a loss.

World number one Magnus Carlsen got back to his winning ways after he defeated Spaniard Vallejo Pons is a game that lasted 46 moves. Earlier in the tournament, Carlsen suffered a shock defeat to Pons and this victory in the second leg was a fitting comeback.

American Hikaru Nakamura also extended his lead in the tournament by displaying some gutsy moves against Levon Aronian and beating him in the eighth round tie.

Points table (after round 8): Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukraine) 14, Carlsen, Nakamura 11 each, Anand 9, Aronian (Armenia) 8, Vallejo Pons (Spain) 7.
