Game four, played over five hours and 50 minutes, proved to be the longest of the match so far and saw both Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen play accurate, fighting chess. In the post-game interaction, the champion and the challenger talked about the critical moments and on continuing to play in what looked a drawn position while also praising each other’s play.
Overall thoughts
Anand: “Something went horribly wrong in the opening. I made one illogical move after the next, I missed something and I was basically lost … Towards the end, it was a little scary with the four rooks ending. I was lucky that just before the time control I could give a check and reach the time control and it happened twice, near move 40 and 60.”
Carlsen: “There was definitely a chance. After winning the pawn I was optimistic. He kept finding resources, and I missed a few things and he just fought really well. Today I couldn’t do enough to break him down. It is a pity to have spoilt such a good position. But it was a very good fight and I feel happy.”
On 64-move game
Carlsen: “There is a free day tomorrow and we are playing for the world championship. I think we should play to the end. At 56, with a minute left, he might have walked into a mate in two, so there was absolutely no reason to let it go … There was a tough fight and this is how chess should be played.”
Anand: “I felt it must be a draw (towards the end), but Magnus kept finding resources. I had a minute left, and I got lucky that I could find those checks in the last minute.”
