I haven’t found anything else when a draw.
        1.Re3 Nc5
        2.Rg3 Rb7
        (2…Ra7 3.Nh6+
        Kh8 4.Rf8+ and white wins)
        3.Nh6+ draw

        1.Re3 Nc5
        2.Rg3 Rb7

If black protects the knight with his rook :

        1… Rd2?
        2.Rg3! Ra7
        3.Nh6+ Kh8
        4.Rf8+! Bxf8
        5.Rg8#

If black moves his knight :

        1.Nc5 Rg3
        2.Rb7 Nh6+
        3.Kh8 Nf7+ (and white survives.)
        If :
        4.Kg8 Nh6 draw.

So it depends on how Black responds to the simple 1.Re3!

In their actual game Gaidarov responded to
1.Re3 with 1…Rd2 and lost after 2.Rg3 etc.

Re3 is surely the best move, but in this puzzle there is no move to win material or checkmate for white. Am i wrong?

Under normal circumstances, I would humbly offer a brilliant solution to this puzzle, but I am suspending all chess puzzle activity until John McCain feels the country is safe enough for him to appear on Letterman. It’s my patriotic duty.

        🙂

If you are, that’s at least two of us.

I think the point here is that White is down a piece and has to find a line to draw. 33.Re3 Nc5 34.Rg3 Rb7 (34…Ra7?? 35.Nh6+ mates) 35.Nh6+ Kh8 36.Nf7+ Kg8 (37…Rxf7 38.Rxf7 and White’s ahead) 37.Nh6+ with a perpetual seems to do the trick.

Of course, someone will now point out something pretty that I’ve completely overlooked which allows White to win ….

i cant see any lines how Re7 is better than Re3? Its’s even worse i think.

the answer to Re7 is Bf8, and then?

The game score, if anybody’s curious.

…Rd2 is just a blunder, and not part of a puzzle i guess. How can people trying to solve a puzzle know what was played, they dont calculate blunders… I am only 1900 but i would have played Nc5 in a normal game (not in blitz i guess)

”How can people trying to solve a puzzle know what was played, they dont calculate blunders…”

Still, 1.Re3! is the best move that secures draw and in the best case (1…Rd2?) even win.

Maybe I’m reading too much into the problem, but I think this poster’s got it exactly right. The lesson here is twofold:

        — find the line that will draw if your opponent plays perfectly;

        — if that same line has coffeehouse potential (33…Rd2? and 34…Ra7?), so much the better.

        1. Re3 is probably the best. It attacks while getting ready to go to Rg3 pinning the Knight. The least is a draw.

Sorry if im wrong. im only 1600
