      Torre to appear at 2012 Manila Open Chess Championship

      ASIA’S FIRST GM TORRE TO GRACE MANILA OPEN CHESS IN ARAW NG MANILA

      ASIA’S FIRST Grand Master (GM) Eugene Torre will make an appearance as the guest speaker during the formal opening of the 2012 Manila Open Chess Championship at on Sunday, June 24 at the SM City Manila.

      Torre, the founding president of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, is expected to encourage participants in the grassroots competition to continue to play chess, as well as to share some of his secrets for his rise as one of the world’s top players during his time.

      “GM Eugene is the perfect choice to be our guest speaker, since most of the young kids today look up to him as their idol, aside from our very own GM Wesley (So),” said International Master (IM) Chito Garma.

      Garma organized the chess tournament along with candidate masters Peter Lim, Cesar Mendiola and Spartan Mining head Louie Ramos, the chairman of the Rizal Park Chess Foundation.

      GMs Oliver Barbosa, Mark Paragua, Darwin Laylo and IMs Ronald Dableo, Rolando Nolte, Barlo Nadera and Emmanuel Senador will lead the field in the one-day tournament which offers P20,000 cash prize to the champion held as part of kick-off activities for the city’s 441st founding anniversary much known “Araw ng Maynila”.

      Defending champion Super GM Wesley So failed to compete in the said chessfest because busy competing in Euro chess.

      The event in sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, headed by chairman/president Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr. and secretary-general Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino Jr.
