      Trinidad and Tobago

      Five-year-old among winners

Five-year-old Michael Taleb, a student of Valsco Montessori School, was among the winners in the Chess Foundation’s Valentine’s Day chess tournament on Saturday.

The tournament, which consisted of six rating groups, saw 50 junior players who cut short their Valentine’s Day to participate in the Chess Foundation’s Invitational Rapid Play event, which was held at the National Library in Port of Spain.

Taleb, playing in the under 900 rated section, was the youngest player in the tournament. His performance in this section came as a surprise to officials, according to Edison Raphael, president of the Chess Foundation.

Raphael said: “Our favourite for this section was the more experienced Safiya Lambert.”

However, Taleb, who recently started training with the Chess Foundation, displayed strong analytical skills during his games and ended the five-round, round-robin tournament tied on four points with two others players, John Hill and Safiya Lambert.
