Chess World Cup to be live
      August 1, 2013
      By CHISHALA MUSONDA

THE World Chess Federation (FIDE) will provide instant live action of the Chess World Cup 2013 billed for Norway where Zambia’s representative Gillan Bwalya will compete.
The 128-player single elimination tournament starts next Saturday and ends on September 3 in Tromso, Norway.

International Master (IM) elect Bwalya will be competing at the games and has been paired against Russian Grand Master Vladimir Framnik in the opening round.

Each round match will consist of two games. The final will be played over four matches.

“Watch all the games here with instant computer analysis, live video and expert commentary,” reads the games website chessworldcup2013.com with commentators including the first woman to earn a GM title, Hungarian Susan Polgar.

“We are proud to present the commentary team for our live coverage of the FIDE World Cup 2013. Lawrence Trent (England) and Susan Polgar will take us through rounds one to four,” a statement reads.

Bwalya will be playing at the World Cup for the first time.

GM Amon Simutowe and IM Stanley Chumfwa are other Zambians that have played at the event.

The Zambian champion will be accompanied to the World Cup by Chess Federation of Zambia tournaments director Aaron Banda.

Bwalya qualified to play at the World Cup when he won the Zone 4.3 Championships in Botswana last May and his feat earned him a sponsorship of US$3,000 (about K16,500) from the Norwegian Embassy.

Peter Svidler beat his Russian compatriot Alexander Grischuk 2.5 points and 1.5 points to win the 2011 World Cup title.
