Up and down results in Khanty-Mansiysk

      Chess Olympiad, Khanty-Mansiysk, Women's Chess

Round 6 Women’s Olympiad general summary

At one point, it looked like the Ukrainian women would beat Russia 3-1. Ukraine had strong advantage on the top 3 boards while having a worse position on board 4. Lahno was the first to score for Ukraine on board 1. However, time pressure doomed Ukraine. Zhukova blundered and had to settle for a draw on board 2. Ushenina blundered and lost on board 3. Russian veteran Galliamova once again delivered a clutch win on board 4 to give Russia a 2.5 – 1.5 win.

      1. Kosintseva, Tatiana 0-1 Lahno, Kateryna
      2. Kosintseva, Nadezhda ½-½ Zhukova, Natalia
      3. Kosteniuk, Alexandra 1-0 Ushenina, Anna
      4. Galliamova, Alisa 1-0 Muzychuk, Mariya

U.S. no match for Georgia. The U.S. women’s team suffered a devastating blow to their medal hope by losing to Georgia this round.

      1. Dzagnidze, Nana 1-0 Krush, Irina
      2. Javakhishvili, Lela 0-1 Zatonskih, Anna
      3. Melia, Salome 1-0 Abrahamyan, Tatev
      4. Khotenashvili, Bela ½-½ Foisor, Sabina-Francesca

The biggest shocker of this round is Hungary defeating a very strong Polish team 4-0! Everything went wrong for Poland. A win for Hungary was not a surprise. But this score is simply stunning! This kind of wipe out almost never happens with strong teams.

      1. Hoang, Thanh Trang 1-0 Socko, Monika
      2. Madl, Ildiko 1-0 Zawadzka, Jolanta
      3. Vajda, Szidonia 1-0 Majdan-Gajewska, Joanna
      4. Gara, Ticia 1-0 Dworakowska, Joanna

China keeps its medal hope alive by beating Russia C 3-1.

      1. Kovanova, Baira 0-1 Hou, Yifan
      2. Bezgodova, Mariya 0-1 Ju, Wenjun
      3. Bezgodova, Svetlana 1-0 Zhao, Xue
      4. Kabanova, Yekaterina 0-1 Wang, Yu

        N. Kosintseva was dead lost. Russia is so lucky this round.
