Caruana didn’t win the 4th rapid game, but the 2nd one.

All this simply proves this is no way to pick a world chess champion challenger.

Magnus Carlsen is the best chess player and should be seeded to play the world champion.

This entire tournament is bogus for world championship status. But a fun tournament none the less.

“this is no way to pick a World Champion Challenger” etc etc
C’mon be realistic! First of all we chess enthusiasts want tournaments galore! Also this tournament only picks one candidate for the candidates tournament next year. So what’s the problem? Unfortunately it seems sometimes necessary to decide a classical chess tourney with rapid/blitz games which of course can be a lottery of sorts.

Fabiano won the 2nd and 4th games.

In the 2nd game, Dominguez lost on time in a hopeless position. The result is marked incorrectly.

In the 4th game, Dominguez lost on time in a drawn position while attempting Rxh2.

World Cup does not pick the next challenger, dummy.

You are correct about the 2nd game (they changed it now on official site, as well as Bologan vs. Cheparinov), but are you sure about the 4th one?

With 10 seconds increment I just can’t imagine a GM to overstep the time limit in such a simple position. I think this game was a draw. The only explanation would be that Dominguez out of frustration of being eliminated just let his clock to run out or ever resigned – a draw or loss is the same for him in this situation.

To my mind Caruana won 2nd game and drew the 4th.
