Chess players invited to use their skills for a good cause
Blair Manor tourney to raise money for veterans shelter.
      From staff reports

Blair Manor hopes chess players make the next move to get involved in its chess tournament, a fundraiser for the organization specializing in providing transitional assistance to U.S. military veterans.

The tournament will take place 6-10 p.m. June 18 at the Fort Wayne Community Center, 233 W. Main St.

Blair Manor provides counseling, housing, food, clothing, employment assistance and transportation to veterans who are homeless or in crisis, a news release said. The facility has beds for 25 male veterans and limited emergency accommodations for non-veterans.

Players paying the $10 registration fee to enter the chess tournament will compete for prizes of $500 for first place, $200 for second or $100 for third.

Games will continue until a winner is determined.

The IPFW Chess Club will serve as arbiters of the tournament and will ensure competitors observe World Chess Federation rules.

The evening also includes a networking social and a dance, the latter of which will feature a deejay playing ’60s and ’70s music.

For more information on Blair Manor, the chess tournament or becoming an event sponsor, call Geno Burgess at 580-8370.
