West Chinnock pupils use chess to improve concentration

PUPILS at a school near Crewkerne are improving their concentration skills by playing chess.
Several pupils from West Chinnock Primary School competed at a chess tournament in Bristol last Wednesday and their teacher believes that they are learning a lot as well as having fun with the game.
Liz Herbert, Key Stage 2 teacher, said: “The children loved competing against other schools at the South West Primary Schools Chess Championships.
“It is a great standard for them and although some of the games are hard they learn an awful lot in the competition.
“They play every week when their chess coach Colin Stanton – who lives in the village – comes in on a Friday and they love learning from him.
“I think it’s excellent for helping the children with their problem-solving skills, as well as their maths and even their concentration.
“Above all, they just do really enjoy it and it is great when they get the chance to go to these competitions and spend the day with other pupils, learning from them and competing against them.”
