      UTB-TSC aiming for President’s Cup

      College Final Four, UTB

      UTB-TSC to participate in 2009 President’s Cup this weekend

      By Ronnie Zamora, Special to The Herald

      The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College Chess Team will compete in the 2009 President’s Cup: The Final Four of College Chess on Saturday and Sunday, at The University of Texas at Dallas.

      Also vying for the coveted championship includes UT-Dallas, Stanford University and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

      In December, the teams qualified for the President’s Cup by placing in the top four at the 2008 Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Championships in Dallas. UTD won the tournament, UMBC finished second, and UTB-TSC and Stanford tied for third.

      “We’ve had three months to prepare for this tournament,” UTB-TSC Chess Program Director Rusty Harwood said. “That’s better for us to focus on our opponents. It should be an exciting tournament.”

      This is the first time UTB-TSC has qualified for the President’s Cup, a team round-robin event scored by total individual points. Each team has four players and up to two alternates. United States Chess Federation rules apply. Each team plays the other three.

      Two rounds are scheduled Saturday and one Sunday. The exact match schedule will not be determined until Friday evening, but the tournament schedule for UTB-TSC will be:

      * UTB-TSC vs. UT-Dallas or UMBC, 10 a.m. Saturday
      * UTB-TSC vs. UT-Dallas or UMBC, 5 p.m. Saturday
      * UTB-TSC vs. Stanford, 9 a.m. Sunday

      Participating for UTB-TSC will be freshman Mauricio Flores, Board 1; senior Daniel Fernandez, Board 2; freshman Max Cornejo, Board 3; and sophomore Nadya Ortiz, Board 4. Freshman Bradley Sawyer is an alternate and is expected to participate.
