All the right moves: Interest in chess on the rise

Chess is a challenge for most adults, but several local children are mastering the game as well — and seeing big results.

“I like to play chess. It’s kinda hard,” said Jackson Jordan, a fourth-grader at Providence Christian Academy in Murfreesboro.

Jordan has been playing chess for about three years and is one of 12 students from the school who will compete in a regional chess tournament March 3 in Cookeville. The winning teams will move onto the state level.

With interest in chess on the rise locally, Michael Hein, a psychology professor at MTSU, started a chess club at Providence last year.

The club began with 10 kids. This year, the club has about 28 members.

Hein’s son, Eric, a fourth-grader, is a member of the club, and he’s looking forward to competing at the regional tournament.

Read a book, play chess; new store offers both

Not just for book lovers. New business owner Sharonda Youngblood has developed a unique approach for providing her child a venue to play chess, his favorite pastime. She opened a bookstore.

Youngblood’s Books, 11760 Olio Road, also offers other activities including Sunday afternoon community chess, after-school story times and crafts, Surviving Parenthood activities, Bible study groups and a monthly book club.

Gurge ties for first in FSC chess tourney

Kenneth Gurge, an attorney from Leominster and one of the region’s top chess players, tied for first place in the David Bronstein Memorial Tournament, recently held at Fitchburg State College.

The event, sponsored by the area’s Wachusett Chess Club, saw the nationally rated Gurge share top honors with Martin Laine of Lunenburg, who is the co-host of the monthly Chess Chat program on Fitchburg Access Television. The co-champions played to a hard-fought draw in the final round of the U.S. Chess Federation rated tournament and finished with three points out of a possible four.

Corps seeks chess players, cyclists for teams

The Corps announced today it’s looking for chess players and cyclists to represent it in competitions worldwide.

Two Corps-wide messages detailed the criteria for leathernecks to join the 2007 Armed Forces Cycling and All-Marine Chess teams.

Chess players vying for one of six spots on the All-Marine team have until April 16 to apply. Applicants must be registered with the United States Chess Federation, the message says.
