Wang YUE and Li CHAO: “WE ARE NOT GOING TO QUIT SMOKING”

Khanty-Mansiysk, Li Chao, Wang Yue, World Cup

      Interview provided by the organizer
      http://ugra-chess.ru/eng/interv_18.htm

The Chinese Grandmasters Wang Yue and Li Chao are leaving the Cup because of their late appearance for the second games of tie-breaks of Round 3. The reason of being late is ridiculous: they were smoking and did not know that the game had already started.

      – How happened that you missed the start of the game?

      – I don’t know what happened, – replies disappointed Wang Yue. – We were smoking with Li Chao and some fellow told us: “Guys, I think you are late for your game”. Of course we rushed into the playing hall . But it was already too late .

      – What did you feel at that moment?

      – I did not understand what happened, – says Wang Yue. But he also added: – Ok, these are the rules, I cannot break them. I was shocked . It seemed that the world has stopped .

      – Did you try to speak with the Arbiter?

      – Sure, we spoke with the Chief Arbiter, – again Wang Yue. – He said: “These are the regulations, we should follow them. The decision is final and nothing can be changed. You should take it, go and prepare for the next game. I think it was a wise advice.”

      – Was the decision fair to your mind?

Yes, this was correct and fair decision. The only decision that could be taken. We cannot do anything . We just need to accept it . In China at all chess tournaments a big screen with the information about the tournament is used. A player can go to the toilet, to smoke or to do something else. But thanks to this screen he always knows how much time he has before the start of the game. Here there is no screen. But we hope that they will use it in future. Most of all I feel pity for Li Chao: he started smoking here, in Khanty to join my smoking company.

      – Perhaps now it is a good reason to quit smoking? Less chances to get into a trouble and more chances to be healthy.

      – I don’t think so… After such a shock you only think to take a long smoke!

      – How are you going to recover?

      – Nothing special… We will have rest, tomorrow a long trip back home, – says Wang Yue.

      – Most probably I will read carefully the regulations of the Cup! – sarcastically added Li Chao.

Regardless of what they were doing, they had wristwatches and they should have known what time the games would start.

This is unforgivable. They should be spanked when they get home.

I am not condoning the two Chinese’ players’ miscues, but in this high level tournament, the arbiter should have told the Wang Yue and Li Chao to go to the playing hall right away, instead of immediately punishing them with forfeit losses for being two minutes late.

The arbiter too could have taken off the two minutes or else started their clock. This would have been the fair way to handle the matter.

I know rules are rules, but the arbiter knew the two Chinese players were in the playing area.

The decision of course benefited the two white European players, Frenchman Bacrot and Azerbajani Gusinov.

Am I insinuating bias. Of course.

        My 2 cents opinion.

There should be a non-smoking rule in a tournament.

Nicotine, found in cigarettes is a known stimulant which induces relaxation, sharpness, calmness, and alertness.

So in a way, the decision to penalize Wang Yue and Li Chao is justified, in view of their use of performance enhancing chemical.

Nicotine is NOT banned by the International Olympic Committee.

The half life psycho-active effects of nicotine found in cigarettes is up to two hours.

So it makes sense that smoking is the perfect legal way to boost performance during the World Cup tie-break sessions.

70 plus year old Korchnoi is a known smoker and still perform at 2600 level. Is nicotine his secret of longevity?

Did Mikhail Tal smoke too during his World Championship days?

How can there be bias when so many non-Europeans are still in the last 16? There’s … there’s … Hey you’re right, there’s only one left – Wesley So.

The two would have lost anyway. Gashimov and bacrot were leading. So it doesn’t make any difference.

I find it unlikely that smoking or any “performance-enhancing” drug can improve chess performance. The problem is that chess requires flexibility in one’s emotional state of arousal. Some positions and time situations call for fast, alert, and intuitive thinking. Other situations call for deliberate, logical, and deductive thinking. A chessplayer can not predict what kind of situation will occur ahead of time. Although, I will note that in blitz fast and intuitive thinking is favored and thus a stimulant might work well; but there are many legal stimulants like caffeine.

“An arbiter warned them that their games were starting in three minutes, and then again a minute before the starting gong. But the two arrived two minutes late at the board and lost their games by forfeit.”

Sounds good. Others though claim it’s an insecticide …

Did Mikhail Tal smoke too during his World Championship days?

According to his book ‘The life and games of Michail Tal’ not yet openly (i.e. on the stage).

“In 1988, I played in the American Open in Long Beach, California, USA, and Tal was playing in the same tournament. He spent little time at the board, however, because they didn’t allow smoking in the tournament hall, and he was almost always standing out in the corridor, dressed in disheveled clothing, chain-smoking away, while all of his fans, including me, would be inside staring at his current game’s position. He would casually stride in between cigarettes; make a dazzling reply (usually very quickly); and then return back to his little smoking area outside.” (Terry Crandall)
